A Short History of the Loyd Lindsay Rooms
Originally commissioned by Lady Wantage in 1903, in memory of her husband, Robert Loyd Lindsay (Lord Wantage), who died in 1901, the original building formed part of a visionary scheme to create the perfectly formed, self-sufficient village of Ardington.
In the early days, the Rooms housed a Men’s Club and was used for entertainments and meetings. They also housed 3 public baths for the Estate Workers, costing 2d for a bath in 1928! The bathhouse was later turned into a snooker room.
In 1988, a major refurbishment of the Loyd Lindsay Rooms commenced with HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother opening the newly refurbished and extended facility in 1990.
